The Changing Adolescent Body: Series Breakdown

Want to know all about the new series in Learning for Life - ‘The Changing Adolescent Body’? Keep reading to see who is endorsing the series, what it covers, and new inclusivity we’ve built into our newest FREE series!

It’s the series everyone has been waiting for. Teaching on puberty can be challenging enough! Add the complexities of teaching this topic to our learners with Down’s syndrome, SEND, and other learning differences, means that it has often been neglected, and as a result their chances to live full and safe lives suffer.

Providing high quality, inclusive, accessible education for our learners is only possible with the support of our sponsors and partners, including QCS. Their support means we can finally provide the teaching on puberty that so many of our users and members of the SEND community have been asking for.

“I’m a huge fan of Learn and Thrive and their mission to empower learners with Down’s syndrome. Learn and Thrive’s resources are incredibly useful and I’m delighted they are launching a new series on The Changing Adolescent Body to further support learners with Down’s syndrome.” -  Georgina Durrant, author of ‘SEND Strategies for the Primary Years’ and founder of The SEN Resources Blog

We are pleased to announce the release of the newest Learning for Life series ‘The Changing Adolescent Body’ on 21st March, World Down’s Syndrome Day!

“Communication is at the heart of interaction and inclusion, at Widgit we strive to support communication for everyone. That’s why we’re so happy to be a part of and endorse the Learning for Life project as a whole and this series, ‘The Changing Adolescent Body’. Our symbols will help to clarify tough topics and strengthen learners’ understanding.” Widgit

Produced with Inclusively Down and using Widgit symbols, this series finds its foundation in the English RSE Primary curriculum but focuses and extends the areas that those with SEND need the extra support. Creating the crucial basis of understanding around growing up, puberty, and personal hygiene, this series provides learners with the knowledge of what is changing for their bodies and those of others. Working alongside our other series, especially ‘Growing Up and Keeping Safe’, these topics will help to protect our learners by giving them the understanding needed about the body and the rights of themselves and others to bodily privacy, autonomy, and more.

“We often support parents and carers with information and resources relating to puberty and adolescence and this resource will be a great supplement to our easy read puberty resource for young people with Down’s syndrome. We already love the Learn and Thrive resources, so this is another fantastic tool for our community use to support learners.” Down’s Syndrome Scotland

'The Changing Adolescent Body' consists of the following videos:

1. Growing and Changing

2a. Puberty and Your Body (Male)

2b. Puberty and Your Body (Female)

2c. Puberty and Your Body (Male & Female)

3. Puberty Changes – Erections

4. Puberty Changes – Getting a Period

5. Puberty Changes – Emotional Rollercoaster

6. My Changing Body – Keeping Clean

7. My Changing Body – Hygiene Routine

This structure has been developed with the needs of our learners in mind, as well as taking into account feedback from our ‘Growing Up and Keeping Safe’ series around sex and gender. As a result, Videos 2a-c are designed in the same way and thus the learner can watch any/all videos to cover the necessary learning. These are based on the sex changes of males and females, rather than any particular gender.

We recommend following the order of Learning for Life series, starting with ‘Growing Up and Keeping Safe’, then ‘Emotions’, ‘Caring Friendships’, ‘Being Healthy’, and finally ‘The Changing Adolescent Body’. The content in each series builds upon the knowledge gained in previous ones, but you can also make choices based on your learners’ needs and existing knowledge. You know your learner best, so enthuse you tailor the learning to best suit their needs.

Is your learner too young to start this series? Why not try Teach Me Too, a series that covers a broader spectrum of the curriculum for young learners.
