Being Healthy: Series Breakdown

At Learn and Thrive, our mission is clear: to use specialist education to break down barriers for children and young people with Down's syndrome and other special educational needs (SEN). We aim to equip them with essential life skills, taught age-appropriately by specialists, and made accessible to all. Thanks to the generous support of sponsors like QCS, we can offer our resources for FREE! This ensures that quality specialist education is accessible to EVERYONE

Today, we're excited to introduce our latest Learning for Life series, ‘Being Healthy’. Created in partnership with 21 Together and featuring Widgit symbols, this series consists of 10 videos, each designed to empower young minds to take control of their physical and mental well-being.

The 'Being Healthy' Series:

Based on the English Primary curriculum, ‘Being Healthy’ delves into three key areas: eating well, exercising, and looking after ourselves. Explore further and you’ll find that these videos cover the theory behind a healthy lifestyle, including discussions about nutrition (food is fuel), various forms of exercise, and how other daily activities contribute to overall mental well-being.

Our primary goal with this series is to provide our young learners with the knowledge and tools they need to keep themselves healthy both mentally and physically. As always, our resources have been produced with specialists to deliver these complex concepts in a clear and understandable way, which the learners can apply in their own lives. Additionally, we reinforce lessons learned from previous Learning for Life series, guiding them on who to turn to for support when needed.

The ‘Being Healthy’ series comprises the following videos:

  • What is Being Healthy?

  • Looking after ourselves

  • Who can I talk to about my health?

  • What is being active and how do I do it?

  • The importance of being active

  • A healthy daily routine

  • What is healthy eating?

  • Why is healthy eating important?

  • Preparing healthy meals

  • Being healthy

We also include an introductory video by James Hanley, Education Lead at 21 Together and SEN Consultant, who features in the videos. He explains more about the purpose of the series and the advised prior knowledge needed to make these videos work for your learners.

If you're not already signed up for Learning for Life, now is the perfect time to join our community of learners.  You can access all our Learning for Life resources, including ‘Being Healthy’, simply by signing up.

Want a step further? Since this series came out we’ve also released ‘How To… Be Healthy’, a series of exercise videos led by and featuring members of the Down’s syndrome and SEN community! There’s a lot of people here you may recognise, including Tailfeather Dance! Take a look at the sneak peak and sign up to Learning for Life to access all the videos for FREE.

We recommend following the order of Learning for Life series, starting with 'Growing Up and Keeping Safe,' then 'Emotions,' 'Caring Friendships,' and finally, 'Being Healthy.' The content in each series builds upon the knowledge gained in previous ones, but you can also make the choice based on your learners' needs and existing knowledge. We know that you are most in tune with your learner, so ensure to tailor the learning we provide to your sessions.

Is your child or young person not quite ready to take this step? Why not try Teach Me Too, a series that covers a broader spectrum of the curriculum for young learners.
