Maths Before Numbers - Series Breakdown

Wow - a brand new Teach Me Too series! This has been a welcome change for us at Learn and Thrive, as we haven’t worked on a new Teach Me Too series for quite a while. We hope you’re just as excited to see it! You can watch our webinar with Karen McGuigan and Jo, our CEO, to learn more about this new series.

But what’s Maths Before Numbers all about? We’ve already got a Mathematics series… so why this new series?

Ambassador Olivia looking taking her understanding of heavy and light into real life!

Overview of Maths Before Numbers

This series covers the very first steps of the EYFS with maths. We don’t cover any counting or sums. This is all about the basics: comparisons, colours, shapes.

Videos in the new series are:

  • Big/Small

  • Up/Down

  • More/Less

  • Fast/Slow

  • Hot/Cold

  • Heavy/Light

  • Long/Sort

  • Full/Empty

  • Same/Different

  • Matching

  • Colours

New Video Setup

We’ve made this set of videos a little bit different. A brand new presenter, Hollie, teaches the theory behind the key concept in each video. While she explains, we dip out to do different activities with the Teach Me Too Team, a group of young learners led by Trina from 21 Together. They demonstrate 2D and 3D modelling of the concepts, as well as the worksheets that you can download.

It’s not only good to have our young learners in the videos so that those you are teaching feel represented, but it gives you, our educators, an idea of how you can be teaching these concepts, how you can manage behaviour, and how you can keep things varied and exciting. Here’s a short preview of what that looks like…

Learning Support

Not only have we got our young learners involved, but we’ve also expanded the learning support in this series. Where we have previously used Makaton signing in the videos, we have also added Widgit symbols into our resources and into our videos. This will help further support the learning and communication needs of your learners by providing a wider range of supports. And don’t worry - Makaton signing is still used across this series.
