See where Maya’s going next…

Learning for Life ambassador Maya is taking her next steps! Having finished school in July, we’ve caught up with her to see what she’s up to now…

What are you doing now that you’ve finished school?

I have started a BTEC in Performing Arts Practice at the Chickenshed Theatre. It’s a two year course and I get the opportunity to learn and train in a working theatre and to be in lots of productions. I am having an amazing time.

What resources do you think have been the most helpful in this transition?

The Emotions resources have been really useful for leaving one setting and starting a new one. Even if you are really excited about something, it can be daunting too. Also the Caring Friendships resources are helpful for understanding new people and making new friends.

Maya’s Mum, Ruth, says:

We’ve re-looked at the emotions resources. Transition to a new setting can be challenging with getting used to new routines, new people and new expectations. Maya finds it hard to express emotions in relation to herself, so I felt a refresh and an acknowledgement that we all experience a range of emotions (and that all emotions are OK to feel) would be helpful.

What are your hopes for the future?

I want to continue studying at Chickenshed and hopefully meet some famous celebrities who will come and watch the shows. I also want to help people with disabilities and differences, and to keep studying sign language.

What's the most fun thing you did this summer?

I went to Disneyland Paris and Paris for my 18th birthday and I met Aljaz from Strictly when I was at Disneyland!!!!! I also went to the Taylor Swift Trail and the Barbie exhibition in London.

What's the most exciting thing you have coming up?

Performing as a pirate in PAN, the Christmas show at the Chickenshed Theatre. The shows start in November and go until January. It will be exciting and magical because there is flying involved!

What an exciting start to the new stage of her life Maya is having! We can’t wait to see all the success she has doing her BTEC and at her Christmas Show. We’ll catch up with her soon!
